Volvo to have access to Tesla charging stations

By 2030, Volvo Cars aims to produce only electric vehicles, while phasing out all Volvos with internal combustion engines, including hybrids.

As a result, the demand for charging stations will increase, with users requiring electricity for both short and long distances.

But meeting this need will take time.

So, to facilitate access to electric vehicles, Volvo has just signed an agreement with Tesla to enable drivers of the Swedish brand to plug in at any time, anywhere in North America.

We explain in this article.

What are the advantages of Tesla charging stations?

More and more players are participating in the democratization of charging stations in North America, so why this agreement with Tesla?

The Swedish brand sees two advantages for its customers.

Firstly, Tesla has an extensive network of Superchargers in many countries, providing good coverage for Volvo drivers.

In North America, for example, Tesla has the largest network, with no fewer than 12,000 fast-charging points.

Secondly, Tesla's Superchargers are designed to provide high-power charging, enabling Volvo electric vehicles to be recharged quickly. With a power rating of up to 250 kW, your vehicle will be fully autonomous in around 30 minutes.

"One of the major barriers to getting more people to switch to electric driving - a key step in making transportation more sustainable - is access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure. Today, with this agreement, we're taking a major step toward eliminating that barrier for Volvo drivers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico." - Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars.

How do I use Tesla's charging stations?

If you're a driver used to the Volvo Cars app, using Tesla's charging stations will be child's play.

Thanks to the Volvo Cars app, you'll be able to find and use charging stations easily, as well as get real-time information on station availability, and pay for your charging sessions via the app.

Please note that this feature is only available (for the time being) in Canada and the United States.

Which electric vehicle in the Volvo range can use them?

Concerning the electric vehicles that will be able to use Tesla's charging stations.

To date, only Volvo's all-electric models, from the XC40 and C40 Recharge to the recently unveiled EX30 and EX90, will be able to find charging points via the Volvo Cars app.

Drivers will be able to use the Supercharger network with an adapter from the first half of 2024.

Finally, drivers of future Volvo cars equipped with the NACS charging port who wish to continue charging at Combined Charging System (CCS) stations will be able to do so with an adapter supplied by Volvo Cars.
