Uber has chosen to partner with Volvo for the development of autonomous vehicles. A true pioneer in the field, Volvo will bring its experience to Uber.
What does this agreement consist of?
Volvo now offers autonomous driving assistance technology that allows you to let your car drive on the highway alone without doing anything, for example. This is only one step towards complete autonomy.
Uber wants to offer its fleet of taxis with autonomous vehicles within a few years, thus replacing the current drivers.
Both agreed to develop a common product.
Knowledge sharing
This collaboration allows for an exchange of knowledge between the two entities. The contribution of Uber engineers will enable Volvo to collect traffic data for example, and Uber to refine its autonomous driving software. The latter will be the final software that will equip the vehicles delivered by Volvo.
Thousands of vehicles sold to Uber
In the statement, Volvo announced it would sell "several thousand compatible vehicles" to Uber. Global giant of the chauffeur-driven car transport, Uber will be equipped with Volvo's autonomous driving module from 2019 onwards.
According to Volvo, this agreement will enable the brand to start mass production of autonomous vehicles.
Volvo semi-autonomous driving
Volvo already offers several standard vehicles with semi-autonomous driving:
- Volvo XC90
- Volvo V90
- Volvo V90 Cross Country
- Volvo S90
- Volvo XC60
- Volvo XC40
