The Volvo XC60 versus its competition: advantages and disadvantages?

Since the launch of the new Volvo XC60, the Swedish brand has continued to evolve its family SUV to the point of developing light hybrid powertrains.

But the technological evolutions aren't limited to the engine. Between standard safety features and driving comfort, many drivers are increasingly embracing the Volvo XC60 2023's philosophy.

In this article, we'll go over the pros and cons of the Volvo XC60 2023, as well as a comparison with its closest competitors.

The advantages of the Volvo XC60 2023

First of all, the advantages of the 2023 Volvo XC60, around the safety of its occupants, are numerous:

  • Lane departure warning,
  • Adaptive cruise control,
  • Automatic emergency braking,
  • BLIS™ with reverse traffic alert
  • Or the anti-collision system with oncoming vehicles.

Of course, all of this comes standard.

So all these features help prevent accidents and protect the vehicle's occupants to achieve the goal of zero fatalities in a Volvo.**

As for comfort, the Volvo XC60 2023 allows you to cover the miles with peace of mind thanks to a soundproof cabin, 4-cylinder engines of 247 hp and 295 hp and an eight-speed automatic transmission that can be set from the interface for more economical or dynamic driving.

Volvo also offers a plug-in hybrid version producing 455hp. Thanks to its hybridization, you can drive up to 58 kilometers in all-electric mode before the combustion engine kicks in.

Finally, in terms of technology, the 2023 Volvo XC60 comes with a large central touchscreen, Google Assistant, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a Harman Kardon audio system (standard from the Ultimate level) and Volvo On Call features offered for 4 years.

NB: The Volvo XC60 has earned the highest crash test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The disadvantages of the 2023 Volvo XC60

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider when purchasing your 2023 Volvo XC60.

First of all, the XC60's ride is smoother than the German competition and less sporty than an Alfa Romeo Stelvio for example. Therefore, don't expect extravagant driving sensations - a Volvo XC60 is above all a comfortable and safe vehicle.

Also, if your needs are for a large towing capacity, it may be a step down from some competing SUVs.

However, these disadvantages can be offset by the new semi-hybrid engines or the addition of Polestar optimization.

The Volvo XC60 versus its competition

Now, let's review the closest competitors of the Volvo XC60 2023 and how they compare.

BMW X3

The BMW X3 is a similarly sized SUV to the Volvo XC60. It offers a sporty driving experience and is equipped with advanced safety features. However, the BMW X3 is less comfortable (as it is sportier in spirit) than the XC60 and offers less space for passengers and luggage.

Finally, the BMW X3 (X-Line level) is also more expensive than the Volvo XC60 (Core level), while offering more advanced options for buyers who are willing to pay more for their SUV.

Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 is another SUV of similar size to the XC60. Like the Volvo XC60, it offers a comfortable driving experience and is equipped with advanced safety features.

However, the Audi Q5 does not offer engines in its catalog that are powerful enough for the weight of the vehicle. The offer starts with the 40 TFSI (201 hp) coupled with a 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox (8 speeds for the XC60) and ends with a 45 TFSI (261 hp). The result is a combined consumption of 9.3 to 9.5l / 100km. That is 1l more than the XC60.

As for the plug-in hybrid version, the Audi Q5 offers a shorter range in electric use (37km) while charging more for its vehicle.

Mercedes GLC

With the Mercedes GLC, the Stuttgart-based brand seeks to position its SUV at the top end of the market, offering a comfortable driving experience and advanced technologies.

Engine-wise, it comes with a base engine (GLC 300 - 255hp) more powerful than the Volvo XC60 combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Finally, the Mercedes-Benz GLC also offers a more spacious cabin and a larger cargo volume (550l of trunk space), which makes it a good choice for families.

However, the GLC is more expensive than the base XC60, not to mention the plethora of options that increase the final purchase price.

Some final words

In the end, the Volvo XC60 2023 is an excellent choice for those looking for a luxurious, comfortable SUV that offers all the safety expertise of the Swedish brand.

And while it may not look as upscale as its German competitors, it offers standard features that are unmatched by comparison.
